Assessments – SATs
Assessing Your Child’s Progress
We assess all children when they join our school to establish a clear and accurate starting point for their learning. This is standard practice in most schools and helps us to tailor our teaching to meet individual needs.
The National Curriculum outlines what children should be taught and the expected standards for each year group. To keep you informed, we will share an update each term showing where your child is working in Reading, Writing, and Maths in relation to Age-Related Expectations (ARE).
Our teaching staff regularly moderate assessments throughout the year to ensure that judgements about your child’s progress are accurate and fair.
In Year 6, children take part in the National Curriculum Tests (commonly known as SATs) during May. These are externally set and marked tests in Reading, Spelling, Punctuation, Grammar, and Maths. We will share the results with you as soon as we receive them—usually in July. Writing is assessed by teachers using national criteria and is also moderated to ensure consistency.
Preparing for SATs
Each March, children take part in a mock SATs week, where they complete practice papers under the same conditions as the real tests in May. This helps them become familiar with the exam environment, so they feel calm, confident, and prepared when the time comes.
One of the most important factors in your child’s SATs success is their reading ability. Strong readers are able to understand questions quickly and respond accurately. We encourage you to support your child by helping them read regularly at home—both fiction and non-fiction texts.
Please also ensure your child continues to complete their weekly English and maths homework, as this reinforces key skills and supports their overall progress.
