Ethos & Values
Deepcar St John’s is a Voluntary Aided Church of England Junior School, catering for children aged 7 to 11. As a Foundation School, we are proud of our strong Christian ethos and close relationship with St John’s Church in Deepcar. We regularly celebrate key events in the Christian calendar, either within school or by visiting our local parish church, and we are delighted to welcome the Vicar into school on a regular basis.
While our values are rooted in the Christian faith, we warmly welcome children of all backgrounds, beliefs, and faiths. Our ethos promotes mutual respect, inclusion, and compassion, ensuring that every child is given the opportunity to thrive — educationally, spiritually, and socially — in a nurturing environment. There is no ideological pressure, but Christian principles guide our approach to learning and relationships.
We are a true community school, with most of our pupils coming from Deepcar and Stocksbridge, although we also welcome children from beyond our immediate catchment area. We have a strong partnership with Royd Nursery Infant School, our main feeder school, which adjoins our site. Miss Jones serves as the Executive Headteacher of both schools, supporting a smooth and well-planned transition for children moving into Key Stage 2.
Our school building, opened in 1968, is set within beautiful, expansive grounds that offer exceptional views across the valley — a stunning and inspiring setting for learning.
For the 2025/26 academic year, we will have six mixed-ability classes: three mixed Year 3/4 classes and three mixed Year 5/6 classes. This structure supports collaborative learning and ensures that all pupils are both challenged and supported appropriately.
At Deepcar St John’s, we aim to create a school environment that is happy, caring, purposeful, and stimulating. We believe that children learn best when they feel safe, valued, and engaged. Our teaching focuses on providing meaningful, relevant learning experiences with clear guidance and positive feedback.
We know that children who are attentive, enthusiastic, respectful, and kind are those who flourish — both academically and personally. By nurturing these qualities, we aim to help our pupils grow into independent, thoughtful, and knowledgeable individuals.
As a Church of England school, we are confident in our Christian foundation and are committed to delivering the highest standards of education. Our vision is to see every child succeed — academically, socially, and emotionally — and to equip them to become responsible, well-rounded citizens for the future.

The schools vision statement -
The school’s vision statement is ‘To create a welcoming Christian community of mutual love and care, where all are valued for who they are, where everyone is inspired to reach their full potential’. We are a church school, a status that we take seriously, and which impacts positively on an ethos which ensures that each individual is treated as special and important.
