Tour de Yorkshire 2017

On Sunday 30th of April Tour de Yorkshire came through Deepcar and finished at Fox Valley, Stocksbridge. As a school we are very proud to say that we have been apart of, what turned out to be a fantastic day.

Initially, we had Alan and Amy, from Tour de Yorkshire, visiting our school to talk to us about the race and we also got to see the original trophies.

We are very proud of two of our year 6 pupils, who both won the Tour de Yorkshire land art competition. On Monday 24th April, they, as well as family members, were invited to Stocksbridge Golf club, where they where presented with a framed picture of their Land art, as well as a years membership for them and a family member to the golf club.  Their land art has appeared in numerous videos and has had a mention in the Look Local, Sheffield Star and on BBC Radio Sheffield.

Alan Law, Lord Mayor of Stocksbridge, joined us in assembly on Tuesday 25th April to announce the winner of the 'Tour de Yorkshire flag competition. Stocksbridge town council were overwhelmed with both the number and the quality of the designs submitted by our school making it a very difficult job to choose a winner. After much deliberation, they finally chose one design. The winner was awarded a special Deepcar St John's T.shirt that has been especially embroidered with 'Winner of Stocksbridge Town Council Tour de Yorkshire flag competition' Additionally, her winning flag design has been printed and later this week everyone at St John's will be given one to take home. Well done to everyone who took part and watch out for your flags around Stocksbridge as some of them may be on display around the town.

Our choir were invited to sing in a Tour de Yorkshire, special weekend concert 'On you Bike' which was held on Saturday 29th April at St Mary's church Bolsterstone. The concert included music from the Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir and Deepcar Brass Band as well as our children. After many weeks of practising, they did themselves and the school proud when the sang their hearts out to a very packed church.

Heres our choir rehearsing for the event.

Our very own Mr Horner, a very keen cyclist, took part in the Sportive event. After cycling 75km over a gruelling course, out of over 560 cyclist he finished in a staggering 10th place. We are very proud of him.

Our children had a fabulous time down at Fox Valley on the day of the race, taking part in the children's parade.  A big thank you to Mr Horner and to Mrs Haywood who both gave up their time, so that our pupils could take part in, what was a once in a life-time opportunity. An absolutely fantastic atmosphere and hopefully a day that they will remember for a very long time.
