It is a statutory requirement in the the National Curriculum that children learn to recite poems from heart. This week has been Poetry Week at
Deepcar St John's. Each class chose a poem:Y3 SB - The Trouble with my Brother
Y4 AD - The Tyger
Y4 JS - Colonel Fazackerley Butterworth-Toast
Y5 HB - The Highwayman
Y6 MH - Night Mail
Y6 DB - I’m a Shrimp
Y6 TR - Pied Piper of Hamelin
On the 11th January, an expectant audience of children and staff were thrilled to hear each class recite their chosen poems. As they each took to the stage it became increasingly difficult to separate such strong performances. Each class were a credit to the school and joy to watch and listen to. We are really proud of all our children, who have worked so hard this week.
The Winners;
Lower School – Mrs Bell’s and Mrs Thompson’s class
Upper School – Mrs Riley’s and Mrs Stewart’s class
The judges said "The standard was truly exemplary with performance levels making it very difficult to choose an overall winner” but at the end of a fantastic morning Mrs Bell’s and Mrs Thompson’s class were announced the overall winners.
Picasso did not feel that art should copy nature. He felt no obligation to remain tied to the more traditional artistic techniques and wanted to emphasize the difference between a painting and reality. Cubism involves different ways of seeing, or perceiving, the world around us. Year 3 are taking inspiration from Picasso and today have been practising sketching techniques before creating their own cubism piece of work.
Year 4 have been mastering their sketching techniques and looking at various pieces of Picasso's work for inspiration. Later this week, they will be using Modrock, which is a plaster bandage that is used for modelling, casting and crafting, to create sculptures.
For 'Art Week', year 5 have been taking their inspiration from one of the great artist, Pablo Picasso. They are going to be creating their own piece of art work using photographs, which they have started to take this afternoon.
In year 6, their current theme is Ancient Egypt. For Art Week, both classes came together to make Greek Urns out of clay.
Deepcar St John's children gathered along with staff, parents, grandparents, carers and friends at our Junior Carol Service this afternoon. After a heartfelt welcome from our wonderful host Revd. Hilda Issacson, the congregation enjoyed readings, prayers, poems, carols and a re-enactment of the Nativity story by brave year 3 children. The beautiful song Hope in Heaven explains the significance of each element of the Christingle. Candles flickered as our choir, joined by the rest of the school, sang exquisitely. The service concluded with Come All Ye Faithful, during which all the congregation were invited to sing along.A wonderful afternoon. Thank you for joining us.
Miss Danks' class months of preparation culminated in a exhilarating and outstanding performance of a Twelfth Night at Barnsley Civic Theatre. Performing in a real theatre in front of an audience was a magical experience and one that they will remember for a long time; a night that will boost confidence and self esteem. We need to thank BlueSpark Foundation, who provided us with a grant which enabled us to take part in the Shakespeare Festival. As well as the cost of entering the festival, their grant covered the payment of the coach, art workshop and evening meal for the children. Well done Miss Danks and class Y4AD.
They do this by providing grants to projects in the UK which focus on helping children and young people who face a range of disadvantages, for example poverty and deprivation; children who have been the victims of abuse or neglect or disabled young people. Children in Need is currently supporting 2400 projects across the UK. The BBC Children in Need Appeal Night took place on Friday 16th November. The Appeal show is a whole evening of entertainment on BBC One with celebrities singing, dancing and doing all sorts of crazy things to raise money. We supported this amazing charity on the 16th, by inviting children to come to school wearing something spotty and making a minimum donation of £1. Thank you to everyone who supported us and helped us raise valuable funds for this fantastic charity.
Our school took part in South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership’s 10 day Active Travel Challenge, which started on Monday 15th October. The challenge was for pupils & their families to choose an active way of getting to school over the 10 day period.
Walking, cycling, skating, scooting and park & stride are all active ways of travelling and we hope by taking part in the challenge it will:
1. Improve health & wellbeing of our pupils & their families.
2. Encourage pupils and families to be more active
3. Reduce congestion and parking problems around our school.
4. Promote active travel for the journey to school and for families to continue after the challenge!
During the challenge each classroom will have a wall chart on which pupils who have travelled actively will record their journey by adding a special sticker to the chart. Those pupils with 10 stickers on the chart at the end of the 10 day challenge will be awarded a special '10 Day Active Travel' badge.
Thank you to everyone who supported us and found an active way of travelling to school during the last 10 days.
